Sharon Licata's Sculpture Accepted into 22nd Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition

Getting Back on the Totem, a limestone sculpture created by Vista Studio artist Sharon Licata, has been accepted into the prestigious 22nd Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition being held by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The exhibition will be held from April 17, 2008 through March 1, 2009. This year's juror was Dr. Sarah Clark-Langager who worked with curator Hank T. Foreman and assistant curator Brook Bower Greene. The exhibition is made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin and Doris Rosen. This national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, ten sculptures are selected for exhibition, and are situated in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year's Rosen Award winner. Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university's annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner coming during the festival's annual Sculpture Walk with that year's juror. Artist's Comments
To me Art is a verb.

I always find myself returning to a sense of motion in my art. It is important that it be viewed from all sides. Only then can one get a sense of all the interactions of space and line that came into play during creation.

No matter what medium, realistic or abstract subject matter, my art has at it's heart, motion; the curves and twists of searching and of reaching upward.

About the Artist
Sharon is a graduate of Agnes Scott College with a B.A. in Art and Political Science, and USC with a Masters of Media Arts. A sculptor of both realistic and abstract form, Sharon works in a variety of media: stone, clay, and formed stone. Her sculptures are in numerous private and corporate collections as she has shown in many parts of the country. When not in the studio, she can usually be found teaching statewide as a “Visiting Artist” for the SC Arts Commission.
