The Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement

LAURA SPONG, The Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement

"A New Way Opening," oil, L. Spong
Columbia’s Spong, a native of Nashville, Tenn., was born in 1926. She is among South Carolina’s most prominent abstract painters. Spong was included in Abstract Art in South Carolina 1949 – 2012, the South Caroline State Museum’s historic overview of abstract art in South Carolina. In recent years, Spong has had solo exhibitions at the Spartanburg (S.C.) Museum of Art, Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., and if ART Gallery and a two-person exhibition with Carl Blair at the Florence (S.C.) Museum. Spong also was represented in group shows throughout the Carolinas and in Georgia and Tennessee. The South Carolina State Art Collection, the South Carolina State Museum and the Greenville County (S.C.) Museum of Art have acquired both early and more recent paintings by Spong in the past decade.
Since the late 1980s, Spong has been a full-time artist, keeping a studio at Vista Studios in Columbia since 1991 and gradually increasing her now considerable reputation. Much of her career has been documented in three exhibition catalogues, Laura Spong at 80: Warming The Chill Wind With Celebration of 2006; Laura Spong 2006 – 2011: Age As An Administrative Device of 2011; and Laura Spong At 90: Six Decades In Paintings, all published by if ART Gallery.

If you don’t, can’t, or won’t paint, then photograph!

This is a show of images from my digital photo era, which started in 2004.  The images are printed in a relatively large format size and were taken in Italy, the U.S., and Chile.  Their style of presentation ranges from the realistic to the abstract, while their subject matter reflects beaches, city walls, cardboard piles, doorways, and comparable locations.  Thanks to Photoshop, several of the images have been transmuted into abstractions, so they can represent realities that are wholly internal.

My love of 20th century Avant-garde painting -- the works of masters on whom I reflect before I shoot, or as I transmute -- is projected into some of the photos I am showing.  A few of them are expressly conceived as homages to painters I admire.

I started photographing in 1971.  It was always a sidelight to my professions.  However, despite a thirty-year full-time job as a professor of Italian here, I did win a S.C. State Fair Third Prize (1982) and a First Prize (2010), and a 4th Place in Polaroid’s nationwide “Picture America Contest” (1984).  I was also a founding member of the Guild of Photographic Artists, a group that operated in Columbia from 1980 to 1983.

Why do I love photography?  It’s quick, in its every aspect: instant gratification / or not.

BFA Thesis Visual Art Exhibition at Gallery 80808

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 30, 2015)- University of South Carolina Honors College student and Bachelor of Fine Arts in art studio candidate, Tucker Prescott, will open his senior gallery exhibition with a reception from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Gallery 80808.

Prescott’s thesis project, “Figuratively Speaking,” is an exploration of the relationships that exist between figures and landscapes. His works vary in size, but scale clearly plays a powerful role in this exploration of space and the human figure. Composed of about 18 pieces, “Figuratively Speaking,” is a collection of works that represent the skills Prescott has developed while studying at the University of South Carolina and abroad at the International Center for the Arts in Monte Castello, Italy.

“This exhibition is a synthesis of academic figure work and a yearning for a fantasy outside of those boundaries,” said Prescott. “I feel like this collection tip toes at the edge of breaking free of classical ideas but does not quite make the complete separation. As new paintings developed, they experimented with a more contemporary space.”

Prescott will graduate with an Honors Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from USC on May 9, 2015. This exhibition is in partial fulfillment of his honors distinction requirements as well as an incredible opportunity for Prescott to reflect on the works he has produced during his four years of study at USC. While Prescott’s passion lies in painting, he also enjoys film production and editing, and as he prepares for graduation, Prescott continues to work at Mad Monkey, the local film and television boutique, as a pre and post-production specialist. Prescott’s projects in painting, film and photography can be viewed on his website, www.tuckerprescott.com.

“Figuratively Speaking,” will be displayed from May 7 to 11 at Gallery 80808 in the Vista. The exhibition will begin with an opening reception on May 7 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and Prescott will be available to discuss his senior exhibition and experience at USC.

For more information, please contact Tucker Prescott at (843) 687- 6870 or email him at precscot5@email.sc.edu.

Upon Further Reflection:  2015 University of South Carolina BFA Thesis Photography Exhibition

May 1 - 3
Opening Reception:  May 1, 2015  5-8 pm

The Studio Art Photography Program at the University of South Carolina presents an exhibition at Vista Studios 80808, 808 Lady Street Columbia, South Carolina with an opening reception, hosted by the artists, on May 1st 2015, from 5-8pm. The exhibition will be on display at Vista Studios 80808 from April 29th through May 3rd, and will feature photography from students of the University’s thesis exhibition course in the Photography Program, including Lyndsay Carroll, Megan Dunbar, Patrick Francis, Samantha Hardin, Nicholas Johnston, Kelly Morris, Kathryn Roberts, Shelby Savage, Christina Smith, Tori Steyne, and LC Woodall.
The students have prepared bodies of work ranging from long-term documentary projects to personal and poetic collections. As a final effort in their BFA thesis projects, the students are producing work to launch their careers as artists and emerge a part of the contemporary art scene. The artists hope to engage in insightful dialogue by inviting the community to view their work.

Please join us at the opening reception, and contact Lyndsay Carroll at lyndsay.carroll@yahoo.com for further information.
