Rob Shaw’s “FLAGS AND SYMBOLS” Art Show

Rob Shaw’s “FLAGS AND SYMBOLS” Art Show
at  GALLERY 80808/VISTA STUDIOS

Local artist Rob Shaw will introduce his new series of paintings from April 5 to April 10, 2012 at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios. The opening reception will be Friday, April 6, 2012 from 5-9 pm.

Rob Shaw’s work consists of mostly landscapes using a thick texture with a palette knife. In this upcoming show, he has also created a series of flag paintings.  Flags are symbols that have striking impact visually.  They are one of the strongest symbols for unity or division in our world, serving not only as a means of identity but also of history and of ideas. Since flags expose these different perceptions of the viewer, Shaw feels they make worthwhile art subjects.

Shaw is the featured artist at Havens Framemakers and Gallery on Gervais Street, where he also teaches oil painting with palette knife classes.  Shaw’s class is enjoyed by both new and experienced painters, and there is a lot of interest by all kinds of students.  Havens has large windows that look out on Gervais Street, a lot of times people will be outside looking in and watching what is being painted. Shaw says “There is a real joy in showing someone who has never painted before the basics of creating a piece of art.”

In 2010, Rob Shaw was a winner of the Cultural Council’s Street Gallery 3 Project. He won Best in Show Professional Division at the SC State Fair in 2008.  He received First Honorable Mention in the 2006 NBSC Oil Painters Invitational. Shaw’s paintings are in many private collections in the US and Europe.  His corporate collectors include First Citizens Bank and The Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties.
