Just Another Cliché - Nov 13-Dec 2 - Resident Artists of Vista Studios

Just  Another  Cliché

November  13th - December  2nd 2014

Opening  Reception  and  Open  Studios  during
Vista  Lights  on  the  November  20th,  from  5-9pm.

The  cat  is  out  of  the  bag!

The  long  and  short  of  it,  the  resident  artists  of  Vista  Studios  will  make  their  mark  by  exploring  the  idea  of  clichés.  Keeping  their  nose  to  the  grindstone,  the  artists  have  found  that  if  they  push  their  ideas  a  bit  further,  something  new  and  different  may  emerge.

Feeling  a  bit  stuck  in  the  mud,  Heidi  Darr-  Hope  embraced  the  adage  nothing  ventured,  nothing  gained,  and  signed  up  for  a  weeklong  workshop,  Printmaking  as  Invention,  offered  at  the  Wildacres  Retreat  by  The  Ringling  School  of  Art  +  Design.  “It  was  more  fun  than  a  barrel  of  monkeys  and  I  fell  in  love  with  the  Monotype”  (a  kind  of  print  made  by  drawing  or  painting  on  a  smooth  non-  absorbent  surface).  After  painting,  searing,  wiping,  and  using  hand  cut  stencils  to  form  an  image  on  the  plate,  the  whole  thing  is  run  through  a  printing  press.  The  process  is  repeated  until  there  is  calm  within  the  storm.

Pat  Gilmartin  continues  to  work  on  her  ceramic  figurative  sculptures,  extending  her  "Remember  or  Forget"  series,  adding  a  new  twist  by  using  animal  figures  to  interact  with  the  human  ones.  In  addition,  she  is  working  in  a  new  medium,  sand  casting  bas-relief  tiles.  The  tiles  can  be  used  indoors  or  out,  as  architectural  accents  for  the  home  or  garden.

Susan  Lenz  has  gone  out  of  her  comfort  zone…the  twilight  zone,  as  the  inspiration  for  her  new  work.

Laurie  McIntosh  continues  her  work  in  Pages,  an  ongoing  series  of  large,  deconstructed  paintings  created  with  multiple  layers  of  calligraphic  marks  and  grounds.  The  pages  are  then  reassembled  and  unconventionally  bound  to  create  new  visual  relationships  between  the  images.

A  new  painting  by  Michel  McNinch  gives  the  saying,  “He  would  give  you  the  shirt  off  his  back”  a  fresh  look.  Her  use  of  color  and  technical  skill  will  knock  your  socks  off.

Laura  Spong  says  of  the  show,  “This  has  been  so  much  fun  to  work  on!  We  have  had  many  laughs  about  the  titles  the  artists  have  come  up  with.  We  hope  everyone  else  has  as  good  a  time  at  the  show  as  we’ve  had  doing  it.”

A  cardboard  sculpture,  Six  of  One,  Half  a  Dozen...  made  by  David  Yaghjian  will  have  you  scratching  your  head  as  he  poses  a  number  of  questions  about  balance.

Eileen  Blyth,  Stephen  Chesley,  Robert  Kennedy,  Sharon  Licata,  and  Kirkland  Smith  will  also  present  new  work  and  be  available  to  meet  visitors  to  their  studios.

Join  us  November  20th,  from  5-  9pm,  for  Vista  Lights  as  birds  of  a  feather  flock  together.  Remember,  there  is  more  than  one  way  to  skin  a  cat,  and  with  holiday  gift  giving  just  around  the  corner,  the  early  bird  catches  the  worm!

Gallery  hours:  Monday  –  Friday  10:00am  -    5:00pm  Saturday  and  Sunday  12:00pm  -    4:00pm  or  by  appointment.

If  you  would  like  more  information  or  images,  please  call  803-622-7838  or  email  Kirkland@KirklandSmith.com.

Works by Jim Adams (l) and Laurie McIntosh (r), on view at Gallery 80808
The importance of an artist’s sketchbook as a preliminary tool vary, but many will tell you it is the springboard to every body of work. Here, within these private pages, an artist is free to write, draw, cut, paste, and pour out anything their imagination desires. Usually, those sketches never get seen by anyone other than its creator.

Artist Laurie McIntosh became so inspired by her doodles and writing that they evolved into an entire array of mixed-media works on paper and panel, deconstructed and reassembled pieces based directly on her handmade sketchbooks. Her work dominates the Penland Connections exhibition at Gallery 80808, but is complemented by the simple yet intriguing sculptures of North Carolina metalsmith Jim Adams.

McIntosh's love of experimentation and abstraction of mark through line and pattern is evident right away, and has carried over from her previous body of

work from 2012 (“All the In Between”), which uses a similar mark-making process. The results are fresh, bold pieces that stand strongly, almost bursting off of the wall. The graphic quality to them give a slightly urban essence, with a stream of black and white used throughout, which is intermixed with highly saturated tones of blue, violet, red, and pretty much any other color you can imagine.

There is an almost mesmerizing, mysterious effect to McIntosh’s mixed-media pieces – her enticing circles, frequently randomly drawn in a grid pattern; scribbled half-cursive, half-inventive line work; number sequencing; mostly unintelligible text that is both alluring and calligraphic. McIntosh takes her works one step further in her gridded spinning box pieces, which are interactive, like her piece titled 2 of 3 Whirling Pages/3-D. They almost beg to be played with, like an adult version of an interactive toddler’s learning toy, where you try to spin and match images or lines.

Standing eloquent and tall among McIntosh’s pieces are Jim Adams’ sculptures, which are brilliant and highly crafted pieces in hand-forged and fabricated steel, iron, hand-carved limestone, wood, and found objects. Reminiscent in spirit to the mixed-media works on the walls by McIntosh, Adams’ pieces have fleeting line worked copper, small dangling metal houses, and even a playful wooden swing in others.

In the main gallery space, the piece Sentinal seems to have a direct connection with McIntosh’s paintings. A drawn metal wiry line creates a gestural circle within another circle, standing above various stone pillars; the compositional similarity is uncanny, even though the artists did not actually collaborate or make their works together. This similarity between the two was discovered during their residency at Penland last year.

McIntosh is a frequent visitor to Penland School of Crafts, located in the mountains of North Carolina, finding immeasurable inspiration from the environment and fellow artists. During her last winter residency at Penland, she forged a friendship with North Carolina artist Jim Adams, who was also doing a residency. Their work might be of two very different materials and subject matter, but somehow work together in an effortless sort of harmony.

Working mostly with metal, wood, and found objects, Adams is based out of North Carolina, with a fairly established following in the Durham and Hillsborough communities. McIntosh, a graphic designer and business owner by day, is a resident artist at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios and now a household name in the Columbia art scene. Her 2012 series, All the in Between: My Story of Agnes, brought strong support and interest, which resulted in a published book and now plans for an original play to be debuted at Trustus Theatre next year. It is currently on display at Richland Library’s main branch.

10/23/14-10/28/14 - Shawn Michael Senior Design Exhibition

Shawn Michael Senior Design Exhibition

10/25/14-10/28/14

Reception:Saturday Oct.25th
6pm to 10pm
Description
This is the Senior Design Exhibition of Shawn M. Glover. I am a native of Orangeburg, SC and moved to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina in 2010. Currently, I am in my final semester at the University and will be graduating in December with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I specialized in Branding and Packaging design. The work on exhibit will include studio assignments while at USC as well as independent pieces.
As an artist, I strive to create a harmony with color, line, shape, form, space, light, and texture in all my work. I was taught that Design is not just making things pretty, it is taking a problem and using your creative license to help find the best possible solution.

Guy Allison and Bryant Dyess, both artist based in St. Matthews, SC decided to collaborate on a show, having sensed a similarity of line, content and attention to detail in their work.  Mr. Dyess allows wood and steel to flow together in a vision that creates pieces of furniture embracing the boldness of industry with an elegant touch of history.  Mr. Allison, painting since the dark ages, uses line, color and humor to tell stories.

Both are left handed and tidy – i.e. “Scrupulously Thorough.”

Operatic Threads

Operatic Threads
A group exhibition and Jasper Magazine release party.

On Thursday, September 18, 2014 Gallery 80808/Vista Studios will be transformed into a unique, operatic atmosphere for Jasper Magazine’s autumn release.  This event is also being featured in the Conagree Vista Guild’s “Third Thursday” art crawl and will take place from 5 – 9 PM at 808 Lady Street in downtown Columbia, SC.

Classical oil paintings by internationally renowned realist Tish Lowe will set the stage in the main gallery.  Palmetto Opera’s artistic director, Walter Cuttino, will lead a one-night-only performance of highlights from Puccini’s La Bohème, hits from familiar musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Carousel.  Palmetto Opera will present an international production of La Bohème at the Koger Center on February 28, 2015.

The atrium will showcase a collaborative installation by fiber artist Susan Lenz and graffiti artist Michael Krajewski.  Their work, Threads: Gathering My Thoughts, will be a manifestation of the mental images and ideas that naturally flow through the human mind while engaged in the viewing of La Bohème.  Lenz’s tangle of unraveled, old threads will cascade in and out of suspended baskets mimicking the colors, complex plots, and emotions of a performance. Krajewski’s bohemian, pencil graffiti will literally express the connections between the visual, musical, dramatic, literary, and poetic world of a bygone, operatic world still dancing in the twenty-first century mind.  The arts exhibition will remain on view through Tuesday, September 30th.

Hours:  Opening reception, Thurs. Sept. 18, 5 – 9.  Weekdays from 11 – 5. Weekends from noon – 5.
