If you don’t, can’t, or won’t paint, then photograph!

This is a show of images from my digital photo era, which started in 2004.  The images are printed in a relatively large format size and were taken in Italy, the U.S., and Chile.  Their style of presentation ranges from the realistic to the abstract, while their subject matter reflects beaches, city walls, cardboard piles, doorways, and comparable locations.  Thanks to Photoshop, several of the images have been transmuted into abstractions, so they can represent realities that are wholly internal.

My love of 20th century Avant-garde painting -- the works of masters on whom I reflect before I shoot, or as I transmute -- is projected into some of the photos I am showing.  A few of them are expressly conceived as homages to painters I admire.

I started photographing in 1971.  It was always a sidelight to my professions.  However, despite a thirty-year full-time job as a professor of Italian here, I did win a S.C. State Fair Third Prize (1982) and a First Prize (2010), and a 4th Place in Polaroid’s nationwide “Picture America Contest” (1984).  I was also a founding member of the Guild of Photographic Artists, a group that operated in Columbia from 1980 to 1983.

Why do I love photography?  It’s quick, in its every aspect: instant gratification / or not.
